Malaria: Deadly, Preventable, Treatable

A Killer Lurks While Children Sleep

Imagine if a dangerous predator lurked silently in your home at night. And you knew nothing about it.

ThanAs a young mother, Daw had no idea a deadly disease infected her 5-year-old son Than as he slept peacefully in his bed. Living in a remote village in Myanmar, she’d never heard of malaria, or known that mosquitoes flying around her home were killers.

When Than got sick, Daw took him to a traditional healer. But Than’s fever got worse; his skin was hot, and panic set in as she watched his body grow weaker. He wouldn’t eat. The only sound he made was a whimper.

In desperation, Daw prayed to idols. But something inside her told her this wouldn’t work and she needed to do something immediately, or her son would die.
