We have heard about the heartache in the village of Olkinyei in Southwest Kenya, a community where the average monthly income is just $5. (Imagine, getting by on just $5 a month!) People go hungry in Olkinyei, and have very little hope for the future.

With you, World Concern will walk alongside families in Olkinyei and help them in significant ways. We envision One Village – Transformed.

We’re focusing on both urgent and long-term needs, areas of life that are essential to progressing beyond mere survival.

Our priorities over these next three years will include:

1. Improving a safe water supply and hygiene training for villagers
2. Providing an education to children
3. Developing small businesses and introducing villagers to banking

The Story of Olkinyei

A bumpy dirt road leads 200 kilometers from Nairobi, Kenya, to the remote village of Olkinyei. Most of the residents of this Maasai community live on less than $1 a day. As pastoralists, they are familiar with the loss of livestock – their only source of income – to starvation from drought.

The children of Olkinyei survive on a bland, nutrient-deprived diet of corn and milk. On rare occasions, a sick animal is slaughtered for food. People share water sources with animals, leading to sickness and disease.

Just one-third of the village is literate, and only children who are old enough to walk to school make the 13 kilometer trek each day – usually barefoot...
