The Disaster Lifeline Fund links World Concern donors to people whose lives have been destroyed by disasters. By giving through it, you share love with families who survived a cyclone, war or earthquake—to face a new life without loved ones, deprived of their homes and livelihoods.
Our donors, working through our staff, extend a lifeline to these people. Each disaster creates diff erent needs. With your help, we work alongside local people and clear a path to lasting recovery.
Situation: A massive earthquake devastates Haiti January 12th, with the worst damage around capital city Port-au-Prince. The UN estimates 250,000 people were killed.
The Lifeline: Initially, we provided emergency supplies to 100,000 people. In the coming months, we are helping Haitians fix or construct more than 2,000 homes. Additionally, we are helping families plant gardens and regain jobs. Scott Valentine with SPIRIT 105.3 travelled with World Concern to Haiti in March to see what needed to be done. Since that time, World Concern has repaired more than 200 homes.
One of those who World Concern has helped is named Rosena Pierre. When the quake hit, she was in her house. She ran out as a wall inside collapsed, along with the roof. Her family lost a bed and a table, but escaped with their lives. She is pictured here with her sisters and her cousins, and says, “Thank you.” We replaced the fallen wall and built a new roof.
Another person we’re helping is a man named Georges Laurent. He is HIV positive, and we are supporting him as he tries to maintain his health and look for work. Until he came to World Concern’s literacy classes, he could not read or write his own name. Now, he can – and is proud to be able to represent his family well. Read Georges story.
Georges’ home collapsed in the earthquake. His daughter lost an arm, and his family is now homeless. He lives on the street, under a tarp, with another 15 people. As World Concern works to rebuild homes, he is a candidate for new shelter.

Situation: 2008’s Cyclone Nargis is the worst known natural disaster to hit Myanmar. It killed 140,000 people, destroying villages along the coast.
The Lifeline: We’ve helped grieving people start living again, replacing tools for fishermen and farmers. We’ve established 100 fresh water sources and built more than 800 homes.
We’re building evacuation centers and teaching about nutrition and hygiene.
Situation: The crisis in Darfur, Sudan, overspills the border into Chad. It has sent 200,000 refugees into displacement camps, their homes and villages ransacked by attackers.
The Lifeline: Through our “Cash for Work” program, refugees receive vouchers for daily needs as payment for working for us. Among the ongoing projects: road repair and the protection of fragile farmland.
Right now we employ 1,800 people, mostly women who are widows or caregivers for the ill.
After a disaster, the world’s poorest people face a daily struggle to survive. You can step in on their behalf with $35 a month as they rebuild. The impact is real, and significant. For example, over the course of two years, your donation is enough to fund rebuilding a home in Haiti.
