Haiti Earthquake Response

Rebuilding Progresses

Six months after the devastating 7.0 magnitude earthquake, life is slowly resuming for families in Haiti, but it is a new post-earthquake life of rebuilding communities and coming to terms with a new “normal.” We are helping families rebuild their lives in a deeper way, focusing on longer-term needs. We’re supporting people by providing jobs, food, health and housing. Housing is critical as the temporary camps and tarps will not withstand the fall rains.

2,000 Haitians Clearing Rubble & Repairing Homes

A World Concern work crew in Port-au-Prince cuts wood to repair homes in their damaged neighborhood. World Concern now employs more than 2,000 Haitians to help repair and rebuild houses. We recently expanded our efforts into the Fort National area.We have repaired or built more than 500 homes and helped hundreds of merchants and small business owners restart their livelihoods through grants.

Although much of the rubble has been cleared and signs of construction can be seen everywhere, hundreds of thousands of people are still living in camps under tarps that have been reduced to shreds.

New Home Kits Arrived

It is part of our solution for families who have lost their homes in the earthquake. It costs about $1,200 to rebuild a family’s life, and includes a new home, an analysis to ensure a family’s basic needs are met, and to provide them assistance to get a livelihood restarted if needed.
