It is World Concern’s ultimate aim to locate and treat all leprosy sufferers in the whole of Somalia, and eventually eradicate the spread of leprosy completely.
World Concern has provided leprosy treatment to sufferers in the Juba Valley, the cradle of the majority of cases, since 1984. In recent years, World Concern has built a network of health partners who are trained in awareness, detection and treatment of the disease.
World Concern provides the training and directly supports the leprosy community on Labadaad Island. Currently World Concern works with 337 leprosy patients.
During the last year, 62 new cases of leprosy were diagnosed and patients began receiving treatment. Eight of these cases had severe disabilities and are benefiting from foot protection we have provided.
Houses of 22 leprosy patients were also repaired, 28 latrines were constructed, and repairs will continue on the leprosy hospital building and the classrooms on Labadaad Island.
This will positively affect the lives of over 900 families affected by leprosy and will also benefit close to 80 villages around that locality.
