While we were celebrating Valentine’s day, the Haitian people were participating in the last of three national days of mourning. Work was minimal. But the days weren’t as dreary as one would imagine. Merry Fitzpatrick, Director of Disaster Response, shares, “People were mostly praising God for what they still had. Amazing.”
We have served over 12,000 families at this point, providing basic needs, including food like rice, beans, milk and meat; water; hygiene kits; and tarps. We’re now beginning the next step of the process: employing people to clear debris and rebuild. We call it “cash for work.” It’s a great way to support families that have lost so much, while continuing relief work.
Shelter is a growing need in Haiti; light rains are starting. But major shipments of building supplies will take awhile to reach here. For now, we are helping families to pull together temporary shelters from the rubble.
Again, thank you for your prayers and support for our brothers and sisters in Haiti.
