FAQs for development positions

Are developmental workers paid?
Yes, but the worker must raise his or her own personal financial support to cover salary and benefits. This is called deputation.

Does World Concern hire individuals from outside the United States?
For our development positions we are currently limited to accepting applications within North America, since we do not have the capacity to handle deputation donations coming in from outside the US and Canada. However, we do partner with a number of Christian organizations in Europe and Asia who place people on World Concern projects, so contact us for the name of a partner organization in your chosen area.

Is training provided in community development?
You will be provided with some training in orientation about World Concern’s methodology for providing holistic and participatory development solutions, however many of our positions require prior experience in a disaster response, development or non-government organization (NGO) setting.

What are the requirements for a job in developmental work?
We are looking for committed Christians who have a heart to serve the neediest families around the world. Most of our long-term development assignments are posts that would be appropriate for families.

What living accommodations will we have?
Housing varies from country to country, but usually during the first few weeks you will be provided housing with a current staff member while you secure permanent housing. The staff will help new fieldworkers locate appropriate housing in the work area.

How do I find out more about current development openings?
Read through our current listings and benefits or write to us with questions at: hr@worldconcern.org.

Do we need to have foreign language experience?
Even though prior experience learning a foreign language is helpful, in most cases we expect that your first several months on the field will be dedicated to intensive language study and then you will hire a tutor for any additional training you may need.

Where do I send my resume?
Please use our job listings and applications system to look for jobs and submit your resume.

What skills are required and/or preferred for a relief worker?
For the most part we prefer experience working outside your home country and region and disaster relief experience, preferably gained in a developing-world setting. The majority of our relief programs require experience working in a low-technology area. Please see the minimal requirements section. Depending on the position, internships may be available for those without experience.

What kinds of needs does World Concern respond to?
We respond to a variety of emergency situations ranging from natural disasters to wars.

What are the job requirements?
We are looking for committed Christians who have a heart to serve the neediest families around the world. Most of our disaster response positions require prior experience in international emergency relief, preferably in a disaster, refugee or IDP setting. Please see the minimal requirements for more details.

How long is the typical assignment?
The length of the assignment will vary with each disaster, depending upon the type of disaster, the type of response, the availability of the staff member and the funding available.  Most paid positions require at least one year commitment, though people often extend to multiple years. Internships typically run 3-6 months.  We've found that it takes at least 3 months to get comfortable in a new international assignment and make a worthwhile contribution.

Can I take my husband/wife/children with me?
Most disaster response situations are not appropriate for family life in the initial stages. In later stages it may be safe enough for family in some circumstances.

How often can I go home for visits?
As disaster response contracts are generally considered short, no provision is usually made for extended home visits.  Relief workers are usually given regular breaks of roughly one week to leave the field for rest and relaxation.  If your home country is close enough to travel home during the breaks, then you may be able to visit home as often as once every three months. Otherwise, you will probably not be able to visit home during your contract period.
